There are 5 steps that all skaters must be able to perform to be allowed to play in a roller derby team.
1. Basic Skating Skills
- Skating Posture
- Stride (getting the most out of each push)
- Crossovers
- Speed and Endurance
- Stops: T-Stop & Plow Stop
2. Falls
- Single Knee Slide
- Double Knee Slide
- Figure 4/Baseball Slide
- 180 Degree Turn Single Knee Fall
- Four point Slide (also known as ‘Superman’)
3. Balance/Agility
- Stepping from a standstill
- Squatting
- Jumps (3 inches)
- Focus
- Weaving
4. Skating With Others
- Giving and recieving whips and pushes
- Pacing
- Weaving Around Moving Obstacles and Unexpected Obstacles
- Leaning
- Bumping.
5. Blocking
- Taking Hits
- Positional Blocking/Frontal Blocking/Stall Blocking
- Checks – hips and shoulder
