Roller Derby – We’re Recruiting!

So you want to join Stockholm Roller Derby League (STRD) – but you are not really sure where to start? That’s great – you’ve come to the right place! STRD is made up of Skaters, Officials, Non-Skating-Officials and Volunteers. The great thing about Roller Derby is you can be one or more of those people in our League. Below you find all the information to start your path to the roller derby track.

Come and see if you like skating and learn more about being on-skates. Being on skates is important for being both a skater and an referee.

Foundational Skills

Foundationals Skills (FS) is for everyone who wants to learn the basics of roller skating. The goal is to teach you the basics that are required to be able to join the STRD Crash Course.

This course is for beginner skaters or beginner roller derby players. You don’t have to have ANY experience or sports background. Everyone over the age of 16 can participate.

You don’t need to sign up, but come a little bit earlier since we start on skate. The practices are held at Ekvallen outdoor skate rink.

To be able to participate in FS you need:

  • Quad roller skates,
  • Knee Pads,
  • Wrist guards
  • Helmet
  • Elbow pads.
  • Mouth guard is recommended but not required.

TRY-OUT for Crash Course

So you’ve decided to continue on your skating path – you want to get into the STRD Crash Course. To have the best possible chance of success to get into the Crash Course, we recommend that you participate in the Foundational Skills sessions.

In the try out, we expect the participants to be able to demonstrate these skills:

  • Derby stance
  • Strides
  • Crossovers
  • Stepping
  • One foot glide
  • Plow stop
  • Falling safely

Other things that aren’t musts, but are desirable:

  • Kneetaps
  • Weave/slalom
  • Skate backwards
  • Transitions
  • Weaving around people
  • Jump: Forward and side to side

Crash Course

The Crash Course is our program for beginner skaters. The purpose is to get you ready to play competitive roller derby or officiate with STRD. To be able to participate in this course, you must pass the try-out.

The Crash Course starts August 8 and runs to the beginning of November. Practice will be 2 times a week.
To be able to participate in CC you need:

  • Quad roller skates,
  • Knee Pads,
  • Wrist guards
  • Helmet
  • Elbow pads.
  • Mouth guard is required.
